Runners get drenched at local 5K

Dozens of Maricopa residents began the first weekend of May with a little exercise and some water to cool them down.

The Splash Into Summer 5K race held Saturday morning within The Villages subdivision raised money for the Miss City of Maricopa scholarship fund and other organization expenses.

“I really think in Maricopa there is a lot of runners, and so whenever they have an opportunity like this to come out and race and support a good cause, it’s always a good vibe,” said Jeanette Masters, the organization’s executive director.

Kids armed with squirt guns sprayed runners at water stations along the route. The Maricopa Fire Department hosed down participants just before crossing the finish line.

In addition to the 5K, children also laced up their shoes for a 1-mile run.

Masters estimated a turnout of about 40 to 50 people, including Jennifer Smestad, this year’s Miss City of Maricopa. Smestad crossed the finish line with a time of 29 minutes and 30 seconds – achieving her goal to beat the half-hour mark.

“It was perfect weather,” Smestad said. “It’s not too hot. And I thought it was a great way to jump into summer and I couldn’t have asked for a better day.”

Masters said the organization plans to host the race again in coming years, in May or June.
