There are no construction closures on the state's highways during either the Christmas or New Year's holiday weekends, ADOT said. The agency recommends using caution and allowing extra travel time due to high traffic volume. [ADOT]

Drivers headed to the Valley this weekend will once again have to make alternate route plans as the Arizona Department of Transportation will close sections of Interstate 10 south of Sky Harbor International Airport from Friday night through early Monday morning.

ADOT recommends drivers plan ahead, allow extra travel time and use alternate routes to accommodate construction on necessary improvement projects.

Closures in the East Valley include westbound I-10 from the Loop 202 Santan/South Mountain freeways interchange to US 60 Superstition Freeway from 10 p.m. Friday until noon Sunday for utility work on I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. All Loop 202 ramps to westbound I-10 will be closed during that time, as will the westbound I-10 on-ramp at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard. ADOT expects heavy traffic and delays in the area.

The agency is recommending westbound I-10 traffic detour on eastbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101 in the Chandler/Tempe areas and use westbound US 60 to reconnect with I-10 beyond the closure. Drivers on northbound Loop 101 also may consider using the westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway to reach Sky Harbor Airport or I-10 in the downtown Phoenix area.

In addition, eastbound I-10 will be narrowed to two lanes between US 60 and Guadalupe Road from 3:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for sign removal.

Eastbound travelers on I-10 will find it closed for utility work between US 60 and the Loop 202 interchange from 8 p.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Monday. Closures are set for eastbound I-10 HOV ramp to eastbound US 60, the westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10 and the eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road. Again, ADOT is expecting heavy traffic and delays in the area during the closures.

Detours recommended by ADOT for eastbound I-10 traffic are eastbound US 60 to southbound Loop 101, then back to westbound Loop 202 to connect with eastbound I-10 beyond closure. An alternate route if coming from the West Valley is using I-10 to southbound/eastbound Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway to connect with I-10 near Chandler Boulevard. Drivers also can consider using the eastbound Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in the Tempe/ASU area to southbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler.

Guadalupe Road will be closed in both directions near I-10 from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday for bridge work.
