Police investigate string of vehicle burglaries

The Maricopa Police Department is investigating a string of vehicle burglaries that occurred Sunday evening on a single street in The Villages subdivision.

Police spokesman Ricky Alvarado said none of the eight vehicles burglarized showed signs of forced entry. Alvarado would not say on which street the incidents occurred nor who police think committed the crimes.

Alvarado said it was likely someone going from car to car, checking if the vehicles were unlocked.

In the past month and a half, about 19 vehicle burglaries have been reported, Alvarado said. In most cases, the vehicles were open.

Items stolen include tools, money, blank checks, stereo equipment and wallets.

In response to The Villages incident and other vehicle burglaries, the city’s police force is increasing patrols at night, but Alvarado said the public can play a big part in helping officers find those responsible.

“Most crimes are solved by calling (in) a suspicious activity,” he said.
