The Maricopa Police Department’s Twitter page has been compromised, but the city is actively working to restore it, a city spokesperson said.
As of Tuesday afternoon, at 2 p.m., the MPD Twitter page was up with a new profile picture. However, all tweets, likes, and the bio seemed to remain normal. The account also does not seem to be following any suspicious accounts.
The city is working with Twitter to suspend the account and regain access to the page.
The city’s Communications Department has taken steps to further protect its other social media channels and there is no indication that personal information of the followers of the Maricopa Police Department page is compromised.
There is no suspicion that the account was compromised by anybody within the city Quinn Konold, communications director for Maricopa, said.
“The Communications Department has a very tight leash on who has access to the accounts,” Konold said.
Until the city regains permissions to the page, it asks that residents disregard any posts or messages from @MPDPIO on Twitter.
In lieu of MPD’s Twitter account, important communications will be issued through its other social media accounts and through its weekly electronic newsletter.
