MUSD Special Olympic athletes bring home gold

Twelve Maricopa Unified School District athletes participating in the state’s summer track and field Special Olympics last week brought home 22 medals, including nine gold medals.

The games were held April 25 to April 27 at Mesa Community College. All MUSD athletes participated in the standing long jump, 4 X 100 meter relay and the softball throw.

In the standing long jump, MUSD athletes received three gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals.

In the 4 X 100 meter relay, three teams participated with one team scoring a gold medal; one tying for fourth place; and the third team finishing fifth.

The softball throw was the team’s best event with five gold medals, two silver and two bronze.

During the three-day event, athletes not only competed they participated in the Special Olympics Village where they played games, created arts and crafts, danced, performed karaoke, took pictures, received temporary tattoos and visited with Ronald McDonald.

MUSD athletes included Nika Webb, Tyler King, Derimi Thompson, Jordan Hamlett, Beau Danny, Chelsey French, Megan Gardner, Lorenzo Hernandez, Jayce Bustos, Bren Valisto, Evan Samayoa and Thalia Leon.
