"MUSD set a "Missing Man Table" at its annual Veterans Day breakfast. The table honors the sacrifice of those who have served and that of their families. It also underscores the importance of the commitment to duty made by the living. Each element on the table symbolizes something specific about the fallen soldier or their family."

The Maricopa Unified School District hosted its annual Veterans Breakfast Wednesday, with more than 40 MUSD employees and community members paying tribute to the nation’s veterans and honor district employees and community members who served in the armed forces.

Students played several important roles in the event and every school in the district had students create decorations for the event site as well as hundreds of cards honoring the veterans and their service.

Maricopa High School student Jonathan Garavito performed the National Anthem on guitar, and MHS Air Force JROTC cadets, under the direction of Lt. Col. Allen Kirksey and Master Sgt. Scott Burton led the missing man ceremony while community member Dave Mundy performed Amazing Grace on the bagpipes at the moving annual event.

“The event was a success as usual, and there really wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” said MUSD Superintendent Tracey Lopeman.

MUSD Governing Board Vice President AnnaMarie Knorr said she thought there were lessons for everyone in the service of the veterans.

“I hope the values our veterans live by inspire each of us to serve in a way that makes a difference in our community,” Knorr said.
