Four schools from the Maricopa Unified School District completed in the State Robotics Championship at Arizona State University Feb. 28.

Out of 31 teams, Maricopa Elementary scored 243 points and finished 13th.

The Saddleback Elementary team, coached by Doug Fortunato and Scott Walters, scored 217 points and finished 16th out of 31.

“We scored nearly four times as many points as at our last meet, and we doubled our highest skill challenge total from 8 points to 16 points,” Fortunato said. “I am extremely proud of how much every member of our team has improved, and the score just shows the smallest part of it.”

Competing for the first year, Pima Butte Elementary’s Robotics team finished 17th with 214 points.

Maricopa High School students also competed in the high school division of the competition. All of the MUSD Robotics teams are sponsored by the Maricopa Ak-Chin STEAM Foundation.
