MUSD team competes at Special Olympics Arizona

The Maricopa Unified School District Special Olympics Track and Field Team participated last weekend in the Special Olympics Arizona summer games at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Twelve athletes – students from Maricopa Elementary School, Maricopa Wells Middle School, Maricopa High School and a home school student – took part in the games.

Coach Pamela Herrera said the team came home with seven gold, seven silver and two bronze medals.

The athletes participated in the following events: standing long jump, 4-by-100 meter relay and softball throw.

In addition to the athletic events, the Olympics provides other fun activities for athletes to enjoy, Herrera said.

“The kids just have a blast,” she said.
