Maricopa Wells Middle School’s Future Cities team won two awards in Washington, D.C., this week.

The National Future Cities Competition was Feb. 14-17.

“They have exceeded all of our expectations by first winning the Arizona Regional competition against 95 other teams, and then winning awards at Nationals,” teacher Robyn Rice said. “They have spent three days competing and have done an absolutely amazing job. I couldn't be more proud of them.”

The team of Joseph Rice, Emily Cordero and Elise Brown Thunder called their future city Diamont de l’Arizona. It won the awards for Most Sustainable Food Production System and Best Residential Zone.

“Along with many, many hours of competition, we have managed to have quite a bit of fun in Washington. D.C.,” Rice said. “We are buried in snow and loving every minute of it.”
