“Bringing Honor through Education” is the theme of the Office of Indian Education’s 2010 Native American student competition in art and writing.

The competition, which celebrates the values and successes of education in Native American communities, is open to all American Indian students in grades Pre-K through 12.

Entries should reflect the promise and importance of pursuing an education for Native youth, exploring the connection between education and culture through art and writing.

Artist submissions will be judged in six different grade levels, with prizes awarded to the top three winners. The writing competition is open to Native American students in grades 6-12, who must submit a 1-2 page personal narrative. Deadline for all submissions is Jan. 29.

Last year’s winning entries were exhibited at the U.S. Department of Education, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, the Oklahoma History Center and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture.

Students must register online at www.kids.indianeducation.org or by phone at 866-259-0060 before submitting their entries. For further information, contact Rayanne Ganuelas via e-mail at [email protected].

Winners will be announced in March.
