According to Maricopa police, Van and his wife arrived home around midnight after a night of gambling and drinking at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino. The woman told police that her husband became angry when she went to the backyard and called her sister, taking her cellphone and throwing it away. She said Van continued to follow her through the house and began yelling at her. She attempted to get away from Van in their bedroom but the door had been broken down by her husband two weeks earlier, she told police.

The woman told police that she feared for her safety when Van drinks, alleging he had physically assaulted her in the past and acts in this way every two to three days. She said she has been too embarrassed to call 911 in the past, police said.

While on the scene, officers said they made multiple attempts to have Van call someone to pick him up and separate himself from the situation, but he refused. He appeared intoxicated and stated multiple times that he had done nothing wrong, police said.

Van was arrested and booked into Pinal County Jail
