One of Maricopa’s first restaurants, the family owned and operated On the Go Bistro, is closing its doors after just nine months in business (see related story).

This morning’s chamber of commerce breakfast was the last meal served by locally-owned On the Go Bistro.

We had a good concept, good prices and great food,” owner Byron Fanning said, “and we had great customers who really liked the restaurant. They just didn’t come back frequently enough.”

src=On the Go Bistro is the first business to fall victim to Maricopa’s high commercial lease rates, which are often commensurate with Scottsdale prices. Fanning, pictured at right, said their $4,000 monthly rent for the 1,400 square foot restaurant was a contributing factor. “We just couldn’t make it work.”

Fanning also cited increased competition for the same small “pie” that is Maricopa. “Every time something opened, we felt the impact,” he said, noting that the future did not look much brighter with declining population growth and a whopping nine new restaurants set to open up in the next two months.
