Pumas celebrate a home play-in victory to reach the CAA quarterinals.

Despite campus distractions, Sequoia Pathway volleyball and football teams have important contests this weekend.

Friday, the football Pumas will wind up the regular season at ASU Prep Academy in Phoenix. The boys are undefeated at 7-0 and on top of the Canyon Athletic Association’s open division.

Last week, they defeated San Tan (4-2), 28-12. ASU Prep is 3-3. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs, which begin Nov. 9 at San Tan.

Pathway football team practices at Pacana Park for its final regular-season game.

Meanwhile, the Pathway volleyball is already in the thick of the playoffs. The Pumas hosted their play-in game against Phoenix College Prep Tuesday, a first for the school. Wearing leg bands expressing support for a terminated teacher, the girls won in straight sets.

Seeded sixth, they are now set to play third-seeded Imagine Prep in the CAA state championship quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Salt River High School.
