Pinal County’s Sheriff completed participation in the 89th Session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) held in Longmont, Colorado, on September, 25 – October 1, 2005. Sheriff Christopher Vasquez was awarded their degree of completion from Larry Solomon, Deputy Director, National Institute of Corrections (NIC), and Fred G. Wilson, Director of Training, NSA.

The National Sheriffs’ Institute is the only national executive development program designed for sheriffs to address the pressing issues faced by them.

During the NSI 89th session Sheriff Vasquez, and 25 other sheriffs from across the country, discussed the numerous ways to respond as leaders to emerging and continuing issues in criminal justice and public safety such as homeland security, school violence, court security, leadership, drugs, disaster relief, jail operations and community relations in the current context of increased awareness for public safety.

Fred G. Wilson, NSA Director of Training, said, “Sheriff Vasquez is a leader with vision for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. It is an honor to have Sheriff Vasquez join the over 3,000 graduates of the NSI since 1973.”

The national Institute of Corrections is a division of the U. S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons. The NIC has been a long-time sponsor of the NSI and is the premier national resource for jail operations, jail design and programming.

NSA also provides management training for sheriffs and their command personnel in school safety and court security. It offers liability insurance, and administers the highly successful National Neighborhood Watch, Weapons of Mass Destruction Response and Triad Programs.
