Pinwheels help pupils commemorate abused children

More than 1,000 pinwheels brightened up Maricopa Elementary School recently when its pupils took part in a program called “Remember the Children” aimed at making them aware of child abuse.

Volunteers from the Pinal County Child Abuse Prevention Council gave pupils 10-minute courses focusing on personal safety and different types of abuse.

“What we teach the kids depends on their age level. For first- through third-graders we don’t go into much detail, but for the fourth- and fifth-graders, we describe the different types of abuse,” said Mary Allen, a member of the council.

The children placed 1,080 pinwheels on school grounds to commemorate children who have suffered abuse in Arizona.
