A man in his 20s was taken to a local hospital Monday afternoon for a psychiatric evaluation after a brief confrontation with a Maricopa police officer.

The officer was serving an order of protection to the man around 2:50 p.m. in the 44000 block of Buckhorn Trail.

The man was outside the residence when he came close to the officer and placed a knife to his own arm, said police spokesman Ricky Alvarado. The officer then drew her handgun and hit the “emergency button” on her portable radio.

The button sends out an alert tone and allows the officer to talk over all other radio traffic, Alvarado said. Other officers immediately responded to the scene.

The man eventually followed the officer’s commands and put the knife down, he said. The officer did not use any type of force.

There were no reports of injuries to the officer or the man, said fire department spokesman Brad Pitassi.
