Maricopa High School underwent a lock down this afternoon after staff received a report that a student may be in possession of a gun.
Upon receiving the report the school’s administration locked down the campus and called police to the scene.
After a 10-minute investigation the student in possession of the weapon was detained.
It was discovered, however, that the weapon in question was just a plastic air gun with a laser-sight attached to it.
The district has a strict policy that forbids any type of weapons, real or not. “This is a situation we take very seriously,” said Tom Beckett, spokesman for the district.
The district is weighing the options for disciplinary actions against the student and may pursue criminal charges.
