Maricopa High School seniors will learn about the dangers of drunk diving and see a movie about crossing the color line in special day of activities Tuesday.

The Maricopa Unified School District is partnering with the Ak-Chin Indian Community, the city of Maricopa, the Maricopa Police Department and the Pinal County Sheriff's Office to provide a day of activities starting at 9:25 a.m. with a presentation by Councilman Bridger Kimball, who will speak about the dangers of drinking and driving and its legal ramifications.

Kimball pleaded guilty Feb. 12 to a criminal traffic violation of being under the influence while in physical control of a vehicle and a civil traffic violation of unsafe lane use. He served a day in the Pinal County Jail and was sentenced to a DUI counseling program and session with MADD – Mother’s Against Drunk Driving – according to Casa Grande Justice Court records.

Sheriff Paul Babeu and Chief Steve Stahl also will speak to the seniors.

Afterward, students will travel to the Ak-Chin Ultrastar Multi-tainment Center where they will have lunch and the movie “42,” the story of Jackie Robinson, the first African-American player to break the major league baseball color barrier.

These activities are funded with proceeds from the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

These funds are the result of drug enforcement efforts in Pinal County. Babeu and District Attorney Lando Voyles recently approved this grant to create an opportunity for students to learn more about making responsible decisions and the importance of remaining drug and alcohol free.
