Maricopa police surrounded a Maricopa Meadows home with guns drawn after a man accidentally fired a weapon inside the house.

The man is charged with Disorderly Conduct with a Firearm (Felony), Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm (Felony) and Endangerment (Misdemeanor), according to police.

The incident began when a mother called 911 to report her adult son had accidentally shot the gun in a bedroom, police said. The homeowner fled the home with two juvenile children leaving the man inside the home alone.

Officers said they learned the man had purchased an AR-15 platform rifle recently and a 40-caliber pistol earlier Tuesday.

A records check indicated the man had several police contacts in 2019 including a mental health emergency petition, when he allegedly threatened to kill his mother and then kill himself. He was also a suspect in a prior burglary investigation and a defendant in prior/expired protective order listing his mother as the protected person.

At the scene, officers set a perimeter around the two-story home deploying patrol rifles and handguns and attempted to call the man on his cellphone. After several attempts with no response, officers tried to initiate contact using a vehicle’s public address system. That effort was also unsuccessful.

Officers continued to reach the man until he finally answered his cellular telephone. According to police, the man was in a highly agitated state, refused to exit the home and told them he did not want to give up or turn over his firearms.

Officers eventually convinced the man to exit the home and he was arrested and booked into the Pinal County Detention Center, police said.

He was not injured, police said.
