Poll results Winter Break

On Wednesday night, the Maricopa Unified School District Governing Board went against the administration’s recommendation to extend Winter Break by four days out of COVID-19 concerns.

Ahead of the vote, we asked readers whether they would support the extension.

We received 190 votes in our informal poll, which asked, “MUSD administration is recommending extending Winter Break by a week due to COVID-19. Do you approve?”

More than half of the respondents (51.6%) said they supported the extension while nearly 43% said they were not in favor of the change to the school calendar.

Nearly 6% said they were not sure.

The poll stimulated discussion with 118 comments on Facebook:

Casey Kupisch supported the extension, writing “Yes, my daughter brought it home from school…keep it shut down..”

Jasmine Doucette took the opposite view. “No,” she wrote. “Those that want virtual schooling already have that option.”

Dawn Brunn said there was a bigger question at play, writing “Open the state up. This will never go away. We need to live with it. Stop closing because someone got exposed. We need to learn to live with it. Not shutting things down.”
