The election to replace departing Mayor Christian Price is still more than two years away, but that doesn’t mean Maricopa residents are short on opinions about who they would like to see take the helm of the city.

Our informal poll question this week asked: “Who is your choice to succeed Christian Price as Mayor?”

The responses were as varied as the candidates.

Councilmember Nancy Smith led the voting with 225 of the 841 votes cast (26.8%) of the tallies. But while she led the voting, Smith was not a clear winner. Councilmember Henry Wade was just behind with 189 votes (22.5%) and was followed closely by Councilmember Rich Vitiello with 171 votes (20.3%).

The other three city council members were farther back, with Councilmember Bob Marsh coming in fourth with 133 votes (15.8%), Vice Mayor Vincent Manfredi with 71 votes (8.44%) and Councilmember Amber Liermann with 52 votes (6.2%).

Manfredi will serve as interim mayor until a new mayor is chosen. If the new mayor is chosen from among the current councilmembers, a new councilmember will be selected to bring the council back to seven members.
