The City of Maricopa Parks, Recreation and Library Department (PRL) is excited to announce that the Spring issue of The Activator: Your Guide To Staying Active in Maricopa will be released and distributed to area schools and businesses on Monday, February 13, 2006. You can also view the latest issue of The Activator online at www.cityofmaricopa.net/PRL.htm. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21.

“We’re excited about the spring programs,” PRL Director Marty McDonald said. “We had over 550 kids and adults register and participate in our winter session recently. I remember when we started in the fall of 2004; we had about 33 people total. We’ve come a long way since then, thanks to a great selection of programs, great instructors and great support from the Maricopa Unified School District in handling our demands and growth.”

When residents open the new issue of The Activator, they’ll discover a world of dance classes, exercise classes, youth sports, special event updates and a whole lot more. The 28-page booklet features detailed descriptions on 70 different classes, sports and special events that residents of the greater Maricopa area can participate in. Last fall residents lined up as early as 6:30 a.m. to secure a spot in some of the more popular programs such as youth dance or tiny tot sports. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

“With help from some great residents, the city has been able to offer new classes for different types of interests and ages,” commented Maria Billingsley, who was recently hired as a Recreation Coordinator for the PRL Department. “We are glad to see so many residents sign up for these different classes because it is a great way to get the community together, which follows our motto: “Creating Community through People, Parks, and Programs.”

Recreation Coordinator Maria Billingsley is responsible for adding to the PRL Department’s vast array of classes and programs.

“I have to tip my cap to Maria quite frankly,” McDonald said. “She’s the first full time recreation hire I’ve made in 18 months. Her main responsibility is to focus on classes and programs in an effort to grow the program. She’s done a great job in a short amount of time. I’m very happy to have her working for us.”

Information about available classes and sports is available at City Hall and on the web site. All area residents are encouraged to sign up for programs early because classes fill up fast; others could be cancelled due to low enrollment figures.

Currently, the City of Maricopa will only accept cash, check or money order for payment. Credit cards are not accepted at this time. You can register for programs and sports activities at City Hall during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Monday through Friday. Please call (520) 568-9098, Ext. 204, for more information.
