PTO President Appeals to Parents

40

The following letter is from the president of the Maricopa Unified School District PTO to Maricopa area parents.

Hi all,

I write to you now in the official capacity as the President of the PTO board. At our last general meeting on Monday, we voted on next year’s business, and opened up the floor to discussion. Of course, the topic on many minds right now is the alternate Kindergarten schedule that has been approved for next year. There are a great many people that have threatened to take their kids from MUSD, to homeschool, or to look at other options. We decided as a board to have a work study on the issue to see what role the PTO should play in this issue, and to get all the facts that we could. We have chosen to take on this subject, as we feel that we are a voice for the parents that would not normally be heard. Also, this decision affects 9 of us on the board who will have kindergartners in the next 2-3 years, so you can see why we needed to take a stand.

I am asking those of you who have children that will be kinders next year and who will be affected directly by this decision to contact me either by e-mail or phone. We need to compile a list of disgruntled parents, and get your viewpoints on the matter. The school board will be reexamining this issue on May 26th at 4:15, and we as a PTO board are preparing some information to help plead the case of the parents who did not have a chance to weigh in when the issue first came up. I need to contact parents who are affected next year. Please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time!
