The Maricopa High School boys baseball team continued its early-season struggles with a 13-9 road loss to Fountain Hills on Tuesday.

The team came out hot in the early innings, taking a 3-1 lead in the first and ended the third with an 8-2 lead. However, the wheels fell off in the fourth inning when the Rams gave up nine runs.

“We just don’t seem to have the ability to put teams away,” said Maricopa coach Charles Barbee.

The loss dropped the Rams’ record to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in 3A South Region play.

Brian Nechamkin and Armando Cano have been leading the Rams at the plate recently. In the past three region games, Cano had a .400 average with six runs scored and four stolen bases, while Nechamkin posted a .750 average, scored three runs and drove in another three.

Errors continue to plague the Rams. In the past three games, the team averaged eight errors per contest. “We have scored enough runs to win these games, but we have just had mental lapses,” Barbee said.

Up next for the Rams is a 3 p.m. home game Friday against Safford.

“We just need to string a few victories together to get our confidence up,” Barbee said.
