Maricopa’s baseball team won its first home game of the season Monday beating South Pointe 13-1 in five innings.

The game was also the first played on the newly constructed diamond which will eventually be used for junior varsity games once the second field is completed.

The Rams dominated the game after the top of the first when South Pointe scored its only run. Maricopa answered by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and then held off the Griffins offense in the top of the second and third to keep the score 3-1. The Rams broke the game- open in the third inning scoring 10 runs off three doubles and several passed balls by South Pointe’s catcher.

Cody Seymore continued to dominate South Pointe with his pitching keeping the Griffins from reaching base in the top of the fourth. After Maricopa was unable to reach base in the bottom half of the inning, South Pointe came up to bat for its last chance to keep the game going. The rules state that any team up by at least 10 runs after five innings wins and the game is stopped. Freshman J.C. Seymore struck out two batters and got the last out on a grounder to second to finish the top of the fifth and secure the win for the Rams.

During the past weekend, Maricopa didn’t have as much luck in the Joe Padilla Tournament beating San Manuel 3-2 in their first game then losing Bisbee 8-2 and Florence 6-5.

This weekend the Rams will host the Matt Huffman Memorial Tournament at Maricopa High School. Game times and dates will be announced.
