The Maricopa High School girls’ volleyball team took on Safford High School on Thursday, but the Bulldogs demonstrated why they are undefeated, sweeping the Rams 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-18).

Safford got off to a fast start in the match behind the powerful hitting of outside hitters Shaysea Alba and Beatriz Villalba. Despite their best attempts, Rams blockers Erin Litchfield and co-captain Jasmine Melvin were unable to keep up with the powerful kills of the Bulldogs.

The Rams valiantly attempted to come back from an early third set deficit. Keyed by the serving of Arielle Fife, the Rams were able to rattle off seven straight points. However, with a 23-11 lead at the beginning of the rally, it was a case of too little scoring too late in the match.

A loss by the Rams drops their overall record to 1-6, while the Bulldogs improved to 6-0 on the season.

Next up for the Rams are road games at Santa Cruz Valley Union High School in Eloy on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and at Florence High School on Oct. 2.
