Last year proved to be a year of giving for some employees of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa.

Members of the HERO committee, a volunteer program open to casino staff and their families, contributed more than 4,000 hours of service and donated $95,000-plus to charities in 2022. According to committee chair Barbara Achten, HERO donated to more than 120 nonprofit organizations across the state.

“Harrah’s has long had a solid reputation for supporting a number of nonprofit organizations throughout the Valley,” said Achten. “And 2022 was no exception.”

Last year, HERO’s volunteer commitments included collecting more than 1,200 pounds of food donations for Maricopa Pantry following a March 28 fire that razed the food bank. The committee also packed meals for Feed My Starving Children and delivered Christmas gifts to F.O.R. Maricopa, among other volunteer efforts.

The HERO committee began more than 20 years ago at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino and is run by 22 employees. Other volunteer groups for casino employees include the environmental committee CodeGreen, the SAVVY business impact group for women’s empowerment and the SALUTE group for veterans.

“We love finding ways for our employees to connect with the Valley community in a meaningful way,” said Achten.
