A school district official said plans call for classes to resume as usual on Monday at Maricopa Elementary School.

A water leak at MES early today prompted the district to move students to nearby Maricopa Wells Middle School. Tom Beckett, a spokesman for the district, said a significant number of students were picked up from the middle school before the end of the day.

Beckett said earlier Friday teachers had brought supplies and were planning to conduct lessons with students who were not picked up. The elementary school students were brought to the middle school’s gym.

Early this morning a “significant” water leak was observed in the library, and about 9 a.m. the decision was made to move students to Maricopa Wells “for their safety and convenience,” according to a Maricopa Unified School District press release.

The two schools, located within the Maricopa Meadows and Alterra subdivisions, are about a mile apart. Students were bused from MES to MWMS.

Beckett said he was not aware of any other areas being affected by the leak other than the library. He did not know specific details about what caused the leak but said there was some damage to the ceiling where pipes are located.

The decision to move students was made because the school’s water was turned off. Students would not have access to drinking water or bathroom facilities, he said.

The district requested services of a plumbing business to help fix the leak.
