Six wrestlers will represent Maricopa High School this weekend in the Arizona State Championship Tournament at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.

Ty Mundt and Cody Seymore each placed second in the 3A regional tournament Feb. 2 and Feb. 3. Joining them will be JD Masterson (3rd), Hunter Field (3rd), Frank Acuna (4th), and Xavier Hefty (4th).

Coach Tyler Brandt said he feels good about the conditioning and technical abilities of his wrestlers going into the state tournament. He also noted that despite the strong performance at regionals the teammates will have to be at their peak to win the state championship.

Brandt said the best part of the season has been watching the wrestlers technical skills grow.

“All of these wrestlers have improved in their positional wrestling as well as their arsenal of wrestling moves,” Brandt said. “They fight to the very last buzzer.”

He also applauded the wrestlers for their academic achievements as limited space due to construction has forced the team to practice late into the evening.

Each wrestler will have to win four straight matches to earn the championship. If at any point they lose a match they will wrestle in the lower bracket for third place.
