The Maricopa Community Theatre production of “The Snow Queen” debuted at the Maricopa High School Lecture Hall Thursday night.

The original “Snow Queen” fairy tale was written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1844. The beloved story has since been adapted to television, theatre and cinema.

The most notable adaptation was Walt Disney Studios’ “Frozen” that came out in 2013. The animated musical was inspired by “The Snow Queen” and took home the Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature Film” in 2014.

The Maricopa Community Theatre is hoping to have similar success with their musical adaptation of the classic tale.

“’The Snow Queen’ is an awesome rock-score musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen story that inspired the movie ‘Frozen,’” Maricopa Community Theatre Artistic Director Carrie Vargas said.

For anyone who missed Thursday’s opening, “The Snow Queen” will return to the MHS Lecture Hall for three more showings. Curtains drop on Friday at 7 p.m. and a double feature on Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m.
