Maricopa Wells Middle School was evacuated Wednesday evening after a cafeteria employee smelled gas.

Battalion Chief Gibby Gorman of Maricopa Fire and Medical said they were unable to locate any leak using their gas meters. However, Southwest Gas has been called out to confirm there is no leak.

The utility company will relight pilot lights and school will be in session tomorrow as usual, Gorman said.

The evacuation came toward the end of an MUSD presentation being held in the cafeteria on suicide prevention. The presentation titled “Not My Kid” will be rescheduled.
