If your little one is afraid of the water, there is a way to rid your child of that fear and get him or her used to being in the water.
Ak-Chin Community Center’s pool is the site for Baby & Me parent-tot swim lessons, which are running for eight weeks. Gold Medal Swim School partners with City of Maricopa Parks and Recreation on the classes.
Brian Fleming, one of the instructors for the program, said the goal is to get babies used to the water. “We have kids here from five months to a year old,” Fleming said. “We want to slowly get the baby away from their parent in the pool.”
The classes use songs and games to make the babies feel safe in the pool. Instructors participating in the classes have undertaken a minimum of 40 hours of Gold Medal Swim School training.

Fleming noted that about 98 percent of the attendees in the program are locals. “We do get some from the Chandler area, but most are from Maricopa,” Fleming said.
There is a one-time, $70 charge for the classes. The rate is pro-rated for those who attend later in the summer. Those interested in participating can sign up at anytime, but classes will end the last week of July.
