The city, with the help of the Maricopa Youth Council, is seeking resident feedback on the possible expansion of recreation activities at the local skate park.

A proposal to provide additional space for BMX-style bikes at Copper Sky Skate Park was formally introduced at the Youth Council’s May 9 and May 15 meetings.

However, with little feedback gained from either meeting, the city and Youth Council are hoping for more electronic feedback via an online survey.

The designated skate park area, outlined in red, shows less than half the space currently being used.

Community Services Director Kristie Riester said the idea has always been on the table to expand the park, however the city has been reluctant to spend money on something that wasn’t going to be used.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense to install something no one needs,” Riester said.

Riester said the existing park was not designed for bikes or scooters, but that preliminary support for the project has been great among skate-park visitors, and is even supported in large part by Mayor Christian Price.

“They’re excited [youth council],” Riester said. “But nothing has been decided.”

To help the city make the decision, “residents, especially users of the skate plaza,” are encouraged to participate in this short online survey.
