Teams forming for Founders Day softball tourney

While Founders Day is more than a month away, the city is gathering teams for its annual softball tournament.

The 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. tournament will run both Sept. 26 and Sept 27 this year, with a per team registration fee of $280.

“This is a great way for members of the community to get out, get active and have some fun,” said city of Maricopa Parks and Recreation coordinator Monica Rubio.

Rubio said she typically calls all the players from past years to solicit their interest in playing in the tournament. “They can’t wait till I start calling,” she said.

The double elimination tournament will feature 55-minute time limits, with the men’s teams playing Saturday and the co-ed teams on Sunday. The first and second place finishers receive trophies and commemorative shirts, and third place finishers receive a trophy.

“We typically have 12 teams participate with 15 to 18 people on each team,” Rubio said.
