Maricopa’s annual fishing derby for kids attracted 579 anglers, hosts and representatives from presenting sponsors Orbitel Communications and Fry’s Marketplace. Last year’s event pulled in about 490.

“This year’s derby saw record participation with 190 kids competing,” Community Services Director Marty McDonald said. “The fishing derby is a wonderful family event that is 100 percent free.”

McDonald added that several kids have participated in the derby since its launch in 2005.

“It’s been fun to watch them grow up and learn a life-long hobby they’ll always appreciate,” he said.

Those who participated were treated to grilled hot dog lunches served up by Fry’s Marketplace employees.

Thanks to the generosity of Orbitel Communications, the city raffled more than 60 prizes, including remote-controlled cars, camping items, an above-ground pool, trampoline and 16 bikes. Each of the prizes promoted the “Get out and Get Active” campaign the city is preparing to launch.

5 year olds – Evyn Yetton (9 fish).

6 year olds – Elaina Olivarez (12 fish).

7 year olds – Lienna Tieu (9 fish).

8 year olds – Tiara Hasbrouck (6 fish).

9 year olds – Seth King (8 fish).

10 year olds – Julian Sanchez (9 fish).

11 year olds – Angel Moreno (16 fish).

12 year olds – Gabriel Bueras Jr. (9 fish).

Each winner receives a custom engraved trophy with their name on it, to be presented at 7 p.m. April 15 during the City Council meeting at the Global Water Center.
