Last week Lady Ram hoopsters Brittany “Flash” Parks and Karla Torres attended Arizona State University’s Women’s Basketball Camp, run by head coach Charli Turner Thorne.
Turner Thorne and the Lady Sun Devils’ staff and players taught the fundamentals of the game and provided a chance for Parks and Torres to compete against strong players and improve their overall game.
Parks and Torres joined 250 other campers in the dorm across the street from Wells Fargo Arena. Players not only developed their basketball skills at camp but also met and developed friendships with other basketball players from around the country and state.
As the camp began, the girls were divided into different teams according to their grade in school and assigned a coach or coaches for the entire camp. Each day Parks and Torres participated with their teams in drills that involved shooting, 1-on-1 moves, foot work, positioning, ball handling, rebounding, conditioning and more.
Turner Thorne is usually present for every session, but this spring she asked to be an assistant coach for the USA Women’s Basketball Team, so she couldn’t make it to all of the sessions during the camp.
Coaches gave each player an evaluation at the end of the camp. Parks and Torres both felt that the camp improved their individual skills and gave them a greater knowledge of the game.
