Desert Wind student advances in VFW essay contest

The Maricopa Unified School District announced Monday Desert Wind Middle School Student Tory Reid-Brown won the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen Essay Sectional Contest.

Tory, a seventh grader, will compete next at the VFW’s state contest Jan. 14 in Casa Grande. This is the second consecutive year Tory has won the sectional contest and advanced to state. He is the son of Oscar and Dee Brown.

The winner of the state contest is eligible to compete at the national conference in Washington, D.C. VFW’s Patriot’s Pen essay competition is dedicated to promoting patriotism among the nation’s youth.

Students are asked to submit an essay in response to a question or statement on a subject that prompts them to consider how democratic ideals and principals apply to their lives.

This year’s theme is “What Patriotism Means to Me.”
