Maricopa City Council on Tuesday approved the procedure for filling an open seat on the panel.

The opening was created on Aug. 16 when Councilmember Nancy Smith was selected mayor by her colleagues, filling the final two years of a term vacated in June by former Mayor Christian Price, who took the role of president and CEO of the Maricopa Economic Development Alliance.

Smith’s Council term also has two years remaining.

City Council agreed that on Aug. 24 it will announce officially that applications are available at the City Clerk’s office. Completed applications are due back by close of business Sept. 6.

On Sept. 13, the Council will select three finalists from the applicant field during a special session. Individual interviews will follow immediately in public in Council Chambers.

If there is a tie among more than the top three selections by the panel, then all tied for the top three positions will be interviewed.

Council may go into executive session at that point to discuss the interviews, and then return to open session to vote on the winner.

The new member will be sworn in at the beginning of the Sept. 20 regular meeting.
