Dust storm on I-8. (ADOT file photo)

A Blowing Dust Advisory will be in effect this afternoon. It is expected to impact the Interstate 8 and I-10 corridors, Sonoran Desert National Monument and surrounding communities in west and northwest Pinal County.

The advisory is from 4 to 10 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.

The threat for a dust storm will increase as winds from distant thunderstorms will be capable of generating blowing dust.

Visibility will be below one mile for many locations, even below one-quarter mile. Outflow winds from thunderstorms may reach 35 mph and locally 55 mph closer to thunderstorms.

Blowing dust may cause hazardous driving conditions. Outdoor activity also should be limited.

Be ready for a sudden drop in visibility. If you encounter blowing dust or blowing sand on the roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way off and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
