A water leak at Maricopa Elementary School prompted MUSD officials to evacuate students to nearby Maricopa Wells Middle School. Parents may pick up their children after 11 a.m.

MES students will be in the middle school’s gym.

Early this morning a “significant” water leak was observed in the library, and about 9 a.m. the decision was made to move students to Maricopa Wells “for their safety and convenience,” according to a Maricopa Unified School District press release.

Tom Beckett, a spokesman for the district, said he was not aware of any other areas being affected by the leak other than the library and the decision to move students was made because the school’s water was turned off. Students would not have access to drinking water or bathroom facilities, he said.

“It’s safety and security,” Beckett said.

He added he was not aware of the leak’s cause. The district has requested services of a plumbing business to assist with fixing the leak.

“MES staff members and district staff will be present to ensure student safety and a smooth transition,” stated the press release.

Parents should bring proper identification as students will only be released to authorized and approved adults. Teachers plan to continue instruction throughout the regularly scheduled school day for those students not picked up.

Beckett said teachers had brought supplies and were planning to conduct lessons within the gym.

The contact number for Maricopa Wells is 520-568-7100 and the school is located at 45725 W. Honeycutt Ave.
