Volunteer engineers drive student project

Maricopa Elementary School played host to a group of active and retired professional engineers from the Society of Automotive Engineers.

During the past month, these engineers have been volunteering their time to help students increase their knowledge, interest and passion for the areas of science, engineering and mathematics.

The A World in Motion program puts fourth-grade students and volunteers together with simple art supplies to design, create and test a boat-like skid propelled by wind power (electric fans) across the multi-purpose room tiled floor.

On Wednesday, Dan Cowley presented the Maricopa Unified School District with a $200 check to offset the cost for the student awards to be presented at the conclusion of the program.

The Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE International’s A World In Motion program is a teacher-administered, industry volunteer-assisted program that brings science, technology, engineering and math education to life in the classroom for students in kindergarten through grade 12.
