Youth flag football registration begins

Lace up the cleats and strap on the flags, registration for the upcoming Maricopa youth flag football league begins June 2.

The city-run program in its fourth year is designed to offer kids the opportunity to learn the skills of the game while building friendships.

“This is a great program for children,” said David Aviles, youth sports coordinator for the city, who added that in addition to players, the league is looking for coaches.

The program is open to children ages 4 to 14 who are assigned to teams in their appropriate age division for ages 4-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14.

“We keep score for the two older divisions, but the younger kids just play for fun,” Aviles said.

The cost for the program is $45. Participants must provide their own mouthpieces, and if they wish, their own cleats.

“They don’t need cleats, but they are recommended,” Aviles said.

Registration ends July 25. Practice will begin two weeks later.

The $45 registration fee includes seven games of flag football, one hour long each, at Pacana Park on Saturday nights beginning Aug. 16.

“We will have two games being played simultaneously throughout the night starting at 5 p.m.,” Aviles said.
