Zumba classes aim to make fitness fun

When asked to describe working out, many would use adjectives like boring, difficult and time-consuming.

It is words such as those that often make the average person unmotivated to get up and burn some calories. However, thanks to Maricopa resident Courtney Lucero, Maricopans can now attach more enticing adjectives to the word fitness.

Lucero is the lead instructor and founder of the Maricopa Zumba Fitness courses.

Zumba is a once-a-week, 50- to 55-minute exercise routine that fuses dances such as salsa, merengue, reggaeton and hip-hop to create an exciting, healthy and rewarding workout. However, the easiest way to describe the product Zumba instructors are bringing to fitness is to state their motto: Ditch the workout! Join the party!

“The feeling you have when leaving a Zumba class is one of great accomplishment,” Lucero said.

Lucero began offering the classes in Maricopa because of a lack of certified dance courses in the area and a desire to spread the knowledge about Zumba.

“I have a passion to help America get and stay healthy while having a blast,” Lucero said.

Lucero has been teaching dance and fitness for 16 years, and she’s been instructing Zumba courses for three years. The master and founder of Zumba, “Beto” Perez, trained and certified Lucero in the fitness craze.

While Lucero is only offering one class a week, she hopes to grow and expand her business to the point that she can offer multiple Zumba courses.

To help her business grow during the economic downswing, Lucero is offering the first Zumba class for free to introduce people to the workout routine.
