Teen with permit charged after Mustang eclipses 80 on main strip

A teenage driver was cited for criminal speed and reckless driving late Nov. 23 after Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol troopers said he was recorded traveling over 80 mph in a 45-mph zone on John Wayne Parkway in Maricopa.

According to DPS, the stop occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. The driver, a 17-year-old Maricopa resident operating on a learner’s permit only, was traveling southbound when troopers clocked the white Ford Mustang at 81 mph.

The teen was criminally cited and released for reckless driving and criminal speed. Because he held only a learner’s permit, he was not legally permitted to drive alone. He was released to his parents, who responded to the scene.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 20 days under Arizona traffic enforcement laws.

Witnesses responded online after DPS posted an image from the stop.

“Top speed achieved, officer,” remarked local resident Chad Conner.

Tim Goos of Tucson added, “Should have had his permit suspended until he turned 21 and the car impounded for forfeiture.”

DPS officials reminded drivers that criminal speed includes exceeding 85 mph anywhere in Arizona, going more than 20 mph over the posted limit or driving faster than 35 mph in a school zone.

No injuries were reported.
