‘347 SUX’: New Maricopa merch line sews up sales at CVS

With nearly 10,000 pharmacies nationwide, you might think the drug store duopolist CVS wouldn’t pay much mind to its lone Maricopa store on Smith-Enke Road at John Wayne Parkway.

The Woonsocket, R.I.-based retailer famously deals drugs (the legal kind), hygiene products, snacks and household sundries. But inside its store at Maricopa Station, you’ll find a new product line that has quickly become a top seller, and you won’t find these items for sale anywhere else.

Maricopa CVS employee Lauren Hart said this morning the store had been selling its new Maricopa-specific merch line, poking fun at the city’s common enemy, State Route 347, “for just a couple of months.”

“They were right at the front until a few days ago,” Hart said. “We must have sold enough to go down to one rack.”

Indeed, the t-shirts printed with images of Arizona license plates reading “347 SUX,” “347 LAME” and “347 NO BUENO” this morning had been relegated to the back of the store near the souvenirs and birthday cards.

Hart said the t-shirts had sold quickly. Mary Ann Valencia, from Santa Rosa Springs, was a fan of the “347 NO BUENO” design, she said.

The apparel line comes from Sierra Madre Trading in Los Angeles County, Calif., a company that designs and manufactures custom t-shirts for retailers such as CVS.

If you want one, you’d better act quick, because a reorder is not guaranteed.
