Six district elementary schools without secure lobbies will get video intercom systems this summer.

The technology utilizes facial recognition and real-time visibility to secure campus entrances and allows staff to view visitors, answer calls and grant entry to buildings.

The intercoms, manufactured by Verkada, are already in place at Maricopa and Desert Sunrise high schools and Desert Wind and Maricopa Wells middle schools.

Construction continues on the redesign of front entrances at Maricopa Wells and Maricopa Elementary School.

Assistant Superintendent Tracey Pastor presented a comprehensive end-of-year report regarding student discipline and school safety at an MUSD Governing Board meeting on June 14.

She highlighted district-wide work in outreach, emergency planning and facilities.

“Facilities is an area where work takes place year-round,” Pastor said.

The video intercoms are “very similar to home video doorbells that we see in use more and more,” Pastor said.

Before installation, Pastor received positive feedback from the district’s Task Force regarding features of the Verkada system – including cloud-based technology, transparent pricing without subscription fees and a 10-year warranty.
