A community mailbox was left open and people wanted answers

Have you ever wondered what you’re supposed to do if your community’s mailbox was left open?

Homestead resident Isis Churchill wanted answers when she took to the Maricopa AZ 85138 Facebook group to let neighbors know her community mailbox at West Robbins Drive and North Daniele Avenue was left hanging open this morning.

This incident wasn’t the result of any criminal hijinks, according to USPS Strategic Communication Specialist John Hyatt.

“This was not the result of vandalism,” Hyatt said. “Unfortunately, the doors did not latch properly after the carrier delivered the mail.”

“As soon as this was brought to our attention, we inspected the boxes and made sure the doors were secure and operating properly,” he said.

Hyatt suggested if a resident ever notices unusual activity at a mailbox, it can be reported to the Maricopa Post Office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

After hours, contact the Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
