Your dream of a smoother drive on Maricopa’s main highway is slowly coming to life — despite our governor.
The Arizona Department of Transportation selected the final design for the long-anticipated Riggs Road interchange on State Route 347, according to a press release this afternoon.
The design removes at least one congestion headache by replacing the current intersection with a bridge that will carry SR 347 traffic over Riggs Road, which will remain at ground level. This includes on- and off-ramps connecting the highway to and from Riggs Road.
This will also allow for the highway to eventually be widened to three lanes in each direction.
The design was one of two featured during an ADOT community meeting in August.
The project is now in the final design stage and construction could begin early next year, the statement said.
Maricopa’s longtime advocate at the State Capitol, Rep. Teresa Martinez, couldn’t hold back her excitement about the announcement.
“I am thrilled that ADOT finally selected a final design. Now we can move forward on the next step,” the Republican lawmaker told InMaricopa this afternoon.
