The Arizona Interscholastic Association is weighing a recommendation to postpone the start of the winter sports season.

Executive director David Hines will meet this week with state health and education officials about rising rates of coronavirus infection and positivity rates in Arizona, according to the association.

On Monday, 1,476 new cases of the virus were reported statewide, with a positivity rate of 9.6%, according to the state health department dashboard. In Pinal County, 98 new cases were reported, with an 8.4% positivity rate.

The recommendation is for competition to begin in January after two weeks of mandatory practice. Winter season athletes started practicing on Nov. 9 for the counties, districts and schools that meet required metrics. Those schools may continue to practice for now.

The AIA executive board will vote on the recommendation at a meeting yet to be scheduled.
