An autism therapy center will replace Big 5 Sporting Goods

The newest addition to The Wells shopping center will provide therapy to local children with autism.

Texas-based Action Behavior Centers ABA Therapy for Autism has installed signs on its new storefront at 41800 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. Permits for the signs were issued Oct. 21 and were installed just recently, according to records filed with the city.

ABA, or applied behavior analysis, is a therapy modality based on the learning sciences. It draws heavily from educational psychology, anthropology and linguistics. Action Behavior Centers is the largest and leading provider of ABA therapy in the country, according to Arizona State University.

Action Behavior Centers operates 39 other locations in Arizona, largely in metro Phoenix, with at least 200 more in 15 other states, according to its company website.

It will replace what once was Big 5 Sporting Goods, the city’s only sporting goods store, which closed last month after eight years in business.

The center will provide therapy to children between a year-and-a-half and 13 years old who are on the autism spectrum. An opening date has not been announced.

InMaricopa has contacted Regional Director of Operations Whitney Sweet with additional questions.
